How it Works
1.
Deep Cleaning & Root Planing
The first stage of treatment involves a non-surgical cleaning of the pockets below the gum line. In deeper areas, root planing or deep scaling is carried out to remove plaque and tartar from the tooth roots. This may require local anaesthetic and several visits for thorough treatment.
2.
Ongoing Assessment & Surgical Consideration
Pocket depths are reviewed after initial therapy. If pockets remain deeper than 5–6mm, this may indicate ongoing active disease and risk of further bone loss. In some cases, particularly around molar teeth, periodontal surgery may be recommended to help stabilise the condition and support bone regeneration where possible.
3.
Personalised Oral Hygiene Support
Your clinician will provide detailed guidance on maintaining excellent oral hygiene at home, demonstrating effective techniques and tools to help control gum disease and support long-term periodontal health.

What is periodontal gum disease?
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and tooth loss.
Is periodontal treatment painful?
Most treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, making it comfortable for patients. You may experience some mild sensitivity afterwards, but this usually settles quickly.
How long does treatment take?
Treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition and may require several visits to thoroughly clean below the gum line and monitor healing.
Can gum disease come back after treatment?
Yes, it can return if good oral hygiene is not maintained. Regular hygiene appointments and effective daily cleaning are essential to keep the condition under control.
